18-year-old dexter is easily one of our most promising artists of 2021, and she’s about to be yours too. With an impressive collection of tracks to her name, this South West Londoner has finally announced her highly anticipated debut EP, I Do Love A Good Sandwich. Landing somewhere in between bedroom pop and R&B, dexter keeps us right where she wants us with her playful new single, “I Like Me.”
On “I Like Me,” dexter explained,
“‘I Like Me’ is about me feeling like I have to be a certain way to make boys like me or to feel more ‘like a girl.’ I was inspired by a period of time in lockdown where I found myself trying to buy a bunch of clothes that would make me feel more feminine and girly but I didn’t even like half the stuff I was buying.”
A memorable two-chord guitar lick may be the foundation of “I Like Me,” but this wholesome cut is made complete with dexter’s introspective lyricism. For anybody out there who’s ever felt like they need to act like somebody else to be liked, dexter offers some solid advice for you in “I Like Me.” To top it off, the accompanying visual has dexter expressing herself exactly how she wants to as she cruises around London.
“I would like it to let listeners know that girls shouldn’t have to act a certain way to feel like they are still feminine or worth people liking them and that it’s cool to be both girly and not girly.”
