Joël Dedicates “Clean Up” to George Floyd and the Black Community

By Alissa Arunarsirakul // January 29, 2021

Joël has been rightfully gaining considerable attention with his experimental R&B and otherworldly songwriting, and it’s about time you familiarize yourself with this rising Toronto talent. On a mission to make the world a better place, Joël digs as deep as he can into his soul for the most personal stories you’d never expect. Addressing the racial injustice this country has faced throughout the years, Joël is ready to unleash his solemn new single, “Clean Up.”

As people become less vocal about the Black Lives Matter movement, Joël reminds us that the Black community is not to be ignored or forgotten with “Clean Up.” This heart wrenching track isn’t necessarily Joël’s way of coping with the current state of the world, but more so a public service announcement inspired by George Floyd. Directed by angelicamilash, the accompanying visual is based on the life of Malcolm X, with “Clean Up” serving as the perfect soundtrack.

On “Clean Up,” Joël shared,

“George Floyd’s death sparked a fire in me. Days later, I jumped in the studio and kept asking myself, ‘How would Malcolm X feel?’ There’s a lot of current fuckery going on in the world and I’m honestly just trying to spread awareness the best way I can, CLEAN UP!”
