GRAE may be young, but she’s more than ready and capable to dominate the indie pop realm. Growing up with Janet Jackson as one of her biggest inspirations has had a significant impact on GRAE, as she now embodies the same fierceness as her beloved childhood hero. Ahead of her forthcoming sophomore EP, GRAE is unveiling her stunning new single, “Ex Lovers.”

On “Ex Lovers,” GRAE shared,

“‘Ex Lovers’ was written during a time in my life where I was dating people just to get over a certain person. I convinced myself there was something real in these relationships when really, I knew there wasn’t. In one of the cases actually, it felt like that person was doing the same thing, trying to get over an ex by dating me, and we found ourselves in the same position, which is where the line ‘maybe we’re just using one another’ came from. We were both trying to get back at our ex lovers.”

With just one listen, the soothing track takes our breath away like never before. As GRAE acknowledges that she was only dating someone new to get over her ex, “Ex Lovers” reminds us to reflect on the reasons why we’re doing the things we do. The accompanying video is a DIY effort on GRAE’s part, and it serves as an eye-opening video chat confessional at GRAE’s disposal.

“The idea for the video for ‘Ex Lovers’ was to have me talking to my computer/phone like a diary and letting out all my emotions to the guy I was [with] and to the guy I was trying to get over. It was interesting to film a video in my bedroom and be creative with it. Due to the virus, we had limited resources but were able to pull through! It will be interesting to look back on in a few years and remember the state of the world we were in at the time.”
