Here’s the only bit of information you need to know about Genevieve Stokes: she’s insanely talented. The 18-year-old may not have lived for as long as more experienced songwriters, but Stokes has already honed a sense of maturity when it comes to her lyricism. Stokes’ alternative pop ballads leave us breathless with every listen, and her new single “Running Away” is no exception.
Newfound love can be intimidating and daunting, and Stokes knows this all too well. Beneath the delicate pianos and otherworldly vocals in “Running Away,” we hear Stokes struggle with the fear and overthinking of a love she has only recently discovered. The next time you consider “Running Away” from love, listen to this heartfelt track and remind yourself that you deserve to be happy and loved.
On “Running Away,” Genevieve Stokes reflected,
“‘Running Away’ was written during an emotionally turbulent time in my life. Finding someone I had a strong connection with brought up emotions I had never felt so intensely. It’s exciting and new, but also overwhelming. I wasn’t sure if my feelings were fully reciprocated and I was too afraid to ask. The song is a representation of how I overthought and tormented myself over my feelings.”
