Katie Iannitello was born and raised in Hawaii, where time doesn’t seem to move nearly as quickly as where she lives now in Los Angeles. This tranquil approach to life soon bled into her musical approach as she later introduced herself to the world as Beauty Queen. With lo-fi inspired beats and alternative pop roots, Beauty Queen is proud to present her first infectious single of the decade: “Sweet Memory.”
On “Sweet Memory,” Beauty Queen reflected,
“I wrote the first line of ‘Sweet Memory’ during one of my 2.2-mile walking commutes from the ramen restaurant I worked at, to the eight bedroom house I lived in during my time in San Francisco. I couldn’t take the bus because I get motion sickness… So needless to say, I got a lot of exercise when I lived there. Walking at night was so peaceful, yet, I did find there to be moments when someone would be striding towards me and I’d wonder… Who is this person? Why are they walking? To where? From where? I liked living in a walking city because I got to see a lot of people in their day to day.”
In all of its wavy goodness, “Sweet Memory” is a charming tune about the countless memories we have with meaningful people who were once strangers. As we bask in the hazy synths and Beauty Queen’s dreamy vocals, we can’t help but think about our pasts in a new light. The accompanying visual features VHS-type footage of a cunning woman who traps heedless men in her foreplay tactics, but each of these victims eventually come to their senses and the cycle repeats itself once more.
“The video was inspired by those thoughts as well, as someone you might meet and go out with… go home with, and be trapped on a terrible date. I’ve been on many dates where someone pulls out an acoustic guitar to sing their songs for me, which is where the inspiration originated.”
