Ever since we first heard Lauren Ruth Ward’s ageless sound, we’ve known how special she really is. The Baltimore native has always displayed the true grit of a hungry songwriter, but she does so with the most poise and grace we’ve ever seen. As a special treat before her forthcoming album, Vol. II, Ward has delivered a fantastic new single, “Water Sign.”
The guitar driven track reminds us of something we would’ve heard decades ago, but Ward has modernized the classic rock sound with the help of contemporary electronics and her visceral vocals. A Scorpio herself, Ward explains in “Water Sign” that she’s been referred to as a firecracker because of her continual dedication and prominence in the Echo Park music scene.
The Dylan Doornbos Hayes-directed music video is presented to us in a camcorder-esque style that begins with an overhead shot of Ward waking up in bed. As she makes her way over to the kitchen, Ward pours herself a cup of coffee into the very mug we see in the track’s artwork. Throughout the video, Ward gallops around Hollywood with a spiky mirror and eventually lays it beside her as she falls asleep at the end of the day.
